Welcome to the web page for our research project on categorization and perception

Our cognitive science lab is looking for participants between age 18 and 35 to take part in a simple 30-minute online experiment, all done on your web browser at home.

The goal of our study is to test how we learn visual patterns.

You are free to drop out of the experiment at any time you wish. Simply close the current tab in your browser.

Our experiment consists of two tasks: judging similarity and learning to categorize. I: The first task is to compare pairs of black-and-white computer-generated textures and rate how similar you find them. II: The second task is to learn by trial and error to sort the textures into two different categories. On each trial, the program will tell you whether you have categorized correctly or incorrectly. III: The first task (I: similarity rating) is repeated at the very end.

Your participation in this study will be completely anonymous. All data generated during the experiment will be kept confidential and accessible only to the research team. Your IP adress will not be saved and thus cannot be divulged by us. Data will only be kept for the time needed to complete the research project, and will then be destroyed.

By participating in this experiment, you will help us understand the human brain and how it learns patterns. We hope the results will be helpful in education, in training experts, in designing machines to learn patterns, in understanding the brain and in helping people who have learning difficulties.
